KANSAS CITY, Mo. –
Van Horn football coach Jeff Tolbert was announced as the seasons’ first Coach of the Week by the Kansas City Chiefs. He shares the title with Shawnee Mission coach Dustin Delaney after strong appearances by both teams this past week.
Tolbert and the Van Horn Falcons earned a 49-48 win over Wyandotte last week in a game that went down
to the final seconds. The Falcons were down22-20 at halftime, but gained the lead in the third quarter. Wyandotte scored 2 touchdowns in a 3 minute span to take the lead with 59 seconds left in the game. After a successful kickoff return the Falcons scored on a 43 yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds left to tie the game at 48. They then kicked the extra point and held on for 3 plays to win 49-48.
As a result, Van Horn will receive a $500 grant toward player health and safety equipment and/or education. Tolbert will be presented with congratulatory footballs autographed by Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid, a certificate recognizing hisselection, in addition to a special-edition Chiefs Coach of the Week hat.
Each coach is now a finalist for their respective state’s Chiefs High School Coach of the Year Award, which will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season.
